Grimm 1x01
*Hank is a confirmed Shutterbug.
*Hank has been married 4 times. I always forget.
*Nick seeing his first woge in the first minute of the episode is a Good Call. Also, my heart at him buying that ring for Juliette. The ring Juliette will never wear.
*Also Nick the profiler. AU where Nick, Audrey, and Will are just cops together and Lucy is the local history professor who gets caught up in their cases.
*"I didn't know you couldn't sing." Their friendship my HEART.
*The Time Wars crossovers are turning into the Big Four of Back in the Day.
*Oooooo the aunt Marie introduction! Played like a villain! Like Ashley! Saving the reveal for later on!
*"Do you have a photo of her?" "Uh, yeah, on my iPhone." Literally Nobody would say it like that.
*.... Nick and Lucy could have met taking Carol and Marie to treatments. .... Except for the whole "different states" thing.
*Marie couldn't move for a week when she saw her first Wesen. We know from later on that she was 11. My HEART.
*Nick killing his first Wesen with the power of "shooting him a whole bunch of times"
*THE KEY. Ohhhh the keys my beloved storyline.
*AU where Meg transfers out of Old City to get a from the Weirdness and ends up working in a Portland hospital. And then her first patient is Aunt Marie.
*Might just let four narratives entwine irrevocably and change each other forever. Idk.
*Renard looking out for Nick... I know he has Ulterior Motives and everything, but to a point, he really does treat his men as his People, under his protection. I think there's some sincerity in that.
*Cannot get over the fact that one of the biggest images from the ads for this-Juliette running through the woods in a red dress-is from a three second dream that has no bearing on the show ever.
*"I think it was just a cat." Juliette, having no idea that a cat will change the course of her life forever.
*Oh, right, Marie was a librarian at one point.
*Hank being the one to figure out that the girl went through the park.... Is very important to me. Nick knows people. But Hank's not just someone who tags along. He's a really good cop.
*R.H. Robin Howell. Red (riding) Hood. I'd forgotten how Specific this show gets sometimes.
*Monroe and Nick's first meeting was so bad, guys. So, so bad. I always forget how truly bad it was. I remember the tackle through the window, but that was the second meeting. The first... Oof.
*"And by the way, you're paying for that window."
*"You people started profiling us over 200 years ago." Given how the show progresses, this has the same mood as that post about Julius Ceasar dying well over 70 years ago. Or was that Abraham Lincoln? Anyway, that.
*"No, I'm here because of the little girl." And "We're not things." . Very similar to Will's "You said you were tracking the boy," and later, Magnus' "I'm not sure how he'd feel about you calling him a thing." Just. Similar.
*Okay but Monroe and Nick's dynamic is made 10x funnier by the fact that Monroe is 10 years older than Nick. Just. Very Tired Guy Does Not Get Paid Enough For This Nonsense. (But yes, obviously he's going to help. Just, for goodness' sake, could you please learn to go to bed at a reasonable time?)
*See, Hank and Joe have very similar roles: The grounded partner to contrast the one who sees the Impossible. The voice of reason to keep the out there one grounded. But whereas Joe is basically a paper cutout designed to look ridiculous while Will looks smart, Hank is a really intelligent man and an excellent cop.
*Wait Adalind really just straight-up tried to kill Marie right in front of Nick? Like, you couldn't have waited until visiting hours were over? You were disguised as a nurse, so it wouldn't have caused you problems.
*"Let's hope she doesn't wake up first." * Immediate cut to Marie opening her eyes* Brilliant episode ending tbh.

That same Thanksgiving in 1940 when Bob Jones College tried soccer from "Up East," they presented a pageant a few days after, "Calling America."
CLEVELAND, Tenn., Dec. 1.--A pageant, "Calling America," was presented in the Margaret Mack auditorium of the Bob Jones college Sunday afternoon. The first episode, which pictured the landing of the Pilgrims, was portrayed by a group of young men and women of the school, including Carl E. Keefer. A synopsis of America's growth was given by Arthur Brumwell, followed by a procession of forty-eight young people representing the forty-eight states to the platform, each member of the group passing beneath the folds of a huge national flag before being seated. The second episode opened with an address praising America, delivered by Harold Kirkpatrick. America was represented by Miss Marjorie Parker. Following a warning of pitfalls which a nation may encounter, the group saluted the flag and gave the pledge of allegiance. Miss Edwardean Edwards, bearing a cross for a symbol, represented Christianity, and appearing before "America,", made a plea for the many basic principles worthy to be chosen. As each bulwark represented was mentioned a word, or song, was given to illustrate the thought. The program closed with the singing of "God Bless America." Mrs. John L. Stone, member of the faculty of the college, in the English department and author of the pageant, gave the introduction to the program.
Arthur Brumwell was a Senior from Milwaukee.
Harold Kilpatrick was a Junior from Alabama:
We all know Marjorie Parker. She was Mary Gaston's niece, married to Monroe, and secretary to Bob Jr.:
Miss Edwardean Edwards was a "Mr." so the paper got that wrong:
Martha Vera Jones Stone exudes a formidable persona. She was born in Louisiana and married John Leon Stone in 1921 in Arcadia, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Baylor; she attended Louisiana Polytechnic.

Love Me Right 1
⛓summary: You’re in your senior year of high school. But you oh so unfortunately had to move away. Which meant you would be spending your last year of high school at a new school. Luckily you’ve done some research on this school and from what you’ve heard, you’d be in for an interesting year.
⛓warnings: NSFW, (does not pertain to every part), adult themes
January 24th
Walking into a new school is not as cliche as the movies make it out to be. You woke up in your new house to your mother telling you not to be nervous. But that was about it for the typical ‘you’re going to a new school routine’. You dressed typically regular. It was late January after all so you had to be mindful. Winter was your favorite season behind fall. You liked layering and looking fashionable while doing it. The only thing was that this school was a preparatory private school so there was a uniform. No problem right? Your last school didn’t have a uniform, but it did have a lot of rules so basically it was no different. You wore your white button up shirt with the school logo and the plaid blue skirt. To make it your own, you wore the Gucci sweater your dad got you last Christmas. You wore white knee high socks and your new Gucci boots to match. Looking in the mirror, you looked like a spoiled kid but you were just well off. Your parents were both surgeons and you were the only child. So maybe spoiled was exactly what you were.
The school was huge, but fairly similar to your old school. It was in an old fashioned building built much like a castle. The typical rich private school look and feel. You were pretty popular at your old school. Not in the ‘bitchy popular girl that everyone hates but they still kiss your ass’ type of popular. But you were a dancer and organized a lot of clubs and such for your school. You weren’t student body president because you didn’t care for that title. You just wanted reform and you got it. But being in a new school would be a fresh start, not that you needed it. You were happy at your old school, but it was boring. Lucky for you this school is rumored to be an interesting one for many reasons. One you were about to find out about.
You walked into your first class after going to your locker. You knew where everything was since you were invited to scope out the school the weekend prior. First class was biology, a favorite. You walked in and your professor, a rather old guy, gave you the cutest old man smile. Old people were a weakness of yours. You were so focused on the cute little old man, you didn’t even realize all the 37 kids staring at you. Yes, 37. Your entire senior class had this biology class. It was for 2 hours just as it would be in college. Regular high schools didn’t seem to do this but private schools did.
“Ah our new pupil to brighten the everlasting 37! Everyone this is Y/N. She’ll be joining us all the way from...?” the old man asked.
“Stonebridge sir. And call me Moe, it’s a nickname I’ve gotten used to.” you said. He smiled and nodded before facing the class.
“All the way from Stonebrigde, everyone this is Moe. Tell me Moe, where does that name come from?” he said sitting on his desk. He was a cool old dude.
“I’ve been a fan of Marilyn Monroe for a long time because of my mother. And when I was little, I couldn’t pronounce Marilyn Monroe so I’d say Mary Moe. And here I am, Moe.” you said. The smile on the old mans face was adorable.
“Well I can tell you’ve got character Moe. Thank you for sharing with us. You can take a seat anywhere, if there are any.” he joked. Old mans got jokes.
You finally look to the class and see all eyes on you. You can’t tell if they are bad looks, they were all so...stoic. You looked around for an empty seat and spotted 3. One between two girls in the very front. Another next to a small boy on the far right. And another in front of a boy on the far left. Looking at your options, the girls was a no. And being on the far right meant getting out of the class last. So the best option was in front of the orange haired boy. You walked over and sat down. Next to you was a another boy, silver hair and a slender tall figure with broad shoulders. The desks were connected by two’s so you figured he’d be your partner in experiments and such.
The professor started his lesson so you got out your laptop and opened up your notes to follow along. You were caught up with what they were doing; most schools follow the same curriculum so you were at the right pace.
“Nice sweater, Moe.” said the boy next to you. You turned to him and saw him staring at your sweater. You looked down at the sudden lost of what you were wearing.
“Thanks.” you replied. It was an odd interaction but you gave him credit for trying to make you comfortable. He shifted in his seat a bit. His posture was already straight so not much changed.
“I’m Sehun. Welcome to Elyxion Private School.” he said. His tone was fake cheery but his expression was still very stoic. You didn’t know how to take the welcome.
“Um...thanks.” you replied rather on the fence. He could tell as he looked over at you. Then the boy with dark brown hair that sat behind him leaned forward to whisper between you two.
“He’s not much of a talker, mostly just an insanely attractive boy.” he said. You tuned to see his face and saw him smirking at you.
“I’m Chanyeol. You can call me Chan, Yeol, Loey, whatever.” he continued. Chanyeol seemed to be a bright kid, fairly talkative to new people. You liked the effort.
“Hi Chanyeol.” you said laughing a little. He smiled showing an impressive set of pearly whites. You were interrupted from your admiring of fine dental care by the boy next to Chanyeol, the one sitting behind you, clearing his throat.
“Since we are clearly not paying attention to the class, why don’t I introduce myself now. I’m Baekhyun, your dashing, charming, hilarious football captain.” he smirked. Baekhyun, the football captain. Said a lot.
“Hi Baekhyun the football captain.” you said faking impressed by twirling your finger in your hair before stopping. Chanyeol and Sehun choked as they tried to hold in their laughs.
“Why do they get polite greetings and I get that?” he said. The hurt evident in his tone. Chanyeol couldn’t stop laughing as his friend; obviously these three were friends, stared at him.
“Well they didn’t brag about themselves, football captain.” you said before turning back around. That was the end of the introduction conversation. Nice to know you were surrounded by a bunch of teenage boys.
February 2nd
First week and a half was great. You were still fairly to yourself but you learned A LOT since your first day. First day expectations are always thrown away after a while. People change and get over the ‘she’s a new girl’ act. One good thing is that your favorite class is biology. Professor Kim was an adorable old man with such a passion for science, it made him even more irresistible. But the down side to that class is the three boys that so graciously were the first people to speak to you. Those three boys, who did a damn good job playing coy and nice, were actually pretty popular and pretty much assholes. At least that’s what you’ve gathered. They seemed pretty nice and all. They were all on he football team; go figure. So the natural instinct of the infamous ‘jock’ mentality was bound to be apart of them. But what you found out later was that they are not only popular for their role on the team.
You were invited to a school event. Not really a school official event but basically a bunch of kids from your class we’re going to this diner that was rented out for the group. Apparently it’s a common thing and a famous spot for the students. It reminds you of a lot of high school shows and movies where there is that one hang out diner that everyone goes to that’s a retro type. It was exactly like that, the diner was called ‘Romantic Universe Diner’ and was a cute hang out spot. Anyways, you went since you had nothing better to do and your parents would be at work. There were about 20 kids there, not much and it made the diner more cozy feeling. You didn’t expect to see anyone you were familiar with there. You were only fairly familiar with about 5 people, 3 being Chanyeol, Sehun and Baekhyun. And what a surprise that they were there occupying their own booth.
“Moe!” you heard the voice of none other than Chanyeol call you. You looked over and saw them sitting waving you over. You walked over looking at your options; if you could find somewhere else to sit, you would. But alas you stood in front of their booth.
“A pleasant surprise seeing you here. Sit.” Baekhyun said scooting over and patting the spot next to him. You sat and took off your coat.
“Why is that surprising? It’s a diner.” you replied.
“Yea but you’re new and all and we figured you’d be home dwelling on missing your old school or something.” he said taking a fry and eating it.
“You figured? What are you just thinking about the new girl?” you joked. You joked sure, but you were a little curious if he meant it that way.
“I mean yea. What else would we be doing?” Chanyeol said. He said it so calmly, like it wasn’t at all a little creepy. You furrowed your brow at him but before you could say anything, a girl came up to the booth. You’d never seen her before but she had to have gone to your school.
“Hey boys.” she said. She was pretty. But you could already tell the type of girl she was, a groupie if you will. Her shirt was a little too tight and her cleavage was on full display. The way her body moved all sensual like was more than telling of her. You weren’t one to judge but you were fairly good at reading the obvious.
“Hey Minsoo. Back already?” Chanyeol said. His expression clearly annoyed.
“Well Paris was fun but not as fun as you.” she said tapping his nose. He faked a smile and peeked over at you, catching Minsoo’s attention. Once she saw you her posture straightened and she crossed her arms.
“Already found a new toy?” she bit out at you. You laughed out of habit. It was your natural response to things like that. Bitchy people acting as if you were beneath them.
“I’ve only been gone a week and you’ve already got a new piece of trashy ass?” she said clearly annoyed by your lightheartedness. A new piece of ass? So they were as you expected, fuckboys.
“It’s not like that Minsoo. You’ll always be our piece of ass. Don’t feel threatened, it’s not a good look on you.” Sehun said. Sehun, the quiet boy, completely caught you off guard.
“Oh please, everything looks good on me. Just as good as nothing.” she smirked before looking at you with pure disgust and walking away. As if she had anyone to look at that way other than herself. And you were now sat with three very comfortable boys who don’t even care that you were just completely caught off guard.
“What the hell was that?” you whispered. It was to yourself but to them as well.
“What?” Baekhyun said trying to feed you a fry for some reason. You pushed his hand away and glared at him.
“What? The dumb bimbo that just called me a ‘new toy’.” you said. They were calm of course, guys didn’t care about this type of thing but there was something you were clearly oblivious to.
“We corrected her. You’re not our new toy, unless you want to be.” Baekhyun said trying to feed you again.
“Why is that such a surprise to you? Unless you didn’t like that we denied you.” Chanyeol said squinting at you. What on earth did that mean?
“I have known you for a week and a half. Stop trying to feed me Baekhyun. And you didn’t ‘deny’ me anything. I didn’t ask to be your ‘toy’. I didn’t even know you were that fucking gross.” you said pushing Baekhyun away from you and getting up. You put on your coat and said one more thing before walking away.
“You guys put on a great front. I honestly thought you were cool dudes.” you said and walked out of the diner. And now you weren’t so sure your cliche movie parallels weren’t so cliche. This was just like a teen movie.

the signs as unusual ebay listings
Source/more.
ARIES: In October 2013, Reddit user sirderpenson posted about a BIC lighter that, when lit, had a flame suspended above the lighter. He then listed the lighter on eBay, drained of butane. The auction reached bids over $100,000 before getting taken down on October 30, 2013. TAURUS: In June 2005, the wife of Tim Shaw, a British radio DJ on Kerrang! 105.2, sold Tim's Lotus Esprit sports car with a Buy It Now price of 50 pence after she heard him flirting with model Jodie Marsh on air. The car was sold within 5 minutes, and it was requested that the buyer pick it up the same day. GEMINI: In August 2014, net artist Michael Green put the 'most expensive GIF of all time' up for auction for $5800. The image was inspired by and based on a piece by artist Jeff Koons titled "Balloon Dog (Orange)". Koons' piece was sold at a Christie's auction for $58 million in 2013, setting the record for "the most expensive work by a living artist sold at auction" and inspiring Green to price his image at $5800. The winner of the auction was to receive a USB drive containing the file and a certificate of authenticity shipped to them from the artist. However, the initial auction ended in September with zero bids. The auction was subsequently re-listed and sold for $202.50. CANCER: In May 2008, Paul Osborn of the United Kingdom listed his wife Sharon for sale on eBay, alleging that she had an affair with a coworker. LEO: In June 2008, Ian Usher put up his "entire life" on auction. The auction included his house in Perth, belongings, introduction to his friends, and a trial at his job. When bidding closed, his "life" sold for $384,000. VIRGO: In November 2013, an anonymous Russian person placed an offer to send cremated remains into Earth orbit to the International Space Station. His close relative at the Baikonur Cosmodrome will pack an urn (containing the ashes of a loved one) with personal belongings of one of the Russian cosmonauts and send it within the Progress spacecraft to the ISS. Next, through a waste gateway, the urn will be released into space to Earth's orbit. LIBRA: In December 2009, a woman auctioned the copyright for a never before seen four-minute home movie of Marilyn Monroe smoking a joint. SCORPIO: In March 2017, an anonymous user put a massive failure within the network of the online dating platform OKCupid for sale which enabled the buyer to avoid the payment system based on paywalling the likes users give and receive to identify their mutual interests. SAGITTARIUS: In January 2006, a group of four men from Australia auctioned themselves to spend the weekend with the promise of "beers, snacks, good conversation and a hell of a lot of laughs" for A$1,300. CAPRICORN: An Australian newspaper reported in December 2004 that a single piece of the Kellogg's breakfast cereal Nutri-Grain sold on eBay for A$1,035 because it happened to bear a slight resemblance to the character E.T. from the Steven Spielberg movie. Apparently the seller went on to make even more money in relation to the sale for his appearance on a nationally televised current affairs program. AQUARIUS: In September 2010, a 23-year-old Stockton-on-Tees man named Michael Fawcett tried to raise money for Cancer Research by selling a ghost. The auction caught the attention of a local newspaper. However, after day 6 of the auction, eBay removed the item stating it was against their policy to sell ‘intangible items or items whose existence cannot be verified on receipt of them, such as ghosts, souls, or spirits’. PISCES: In 2004, a partially eaten, 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich said to bear the image of the Virgin Mary sold on eBay for $28,000.

“I need you to promise not to tell your mother, or even Michael for that matter. They believe in love a little differently and as much as you may grow to hate them for it just remember that it’s their loss. They’re losing out on so much love it is incomprehensible.”
“I’ll never tell her don’t worry dad. I’d never break one of our promises.” He smiles with tears in his eyes.
That was the last promise I ever made my dad.

the last meeting
Peter and I crossed the threshold of an old run-down house on Frank Street. We did not know it at the time, but we were entering onto the stage of what would be a tragic spectacle. Neither of us had seen John in years and we both had jumped at the opportunity for a reunion. We wanted things to be as they were in our romanticized memories of youth. Days that were spent together on vacant lots of construction sites, derelict homes rented by punks and degenerates, and basements of our family homes. Uneasiness and excitement became danced in my belly and the overwhelming optimism I felt about us once again coming together dulled my senses to the tension that was already starting to build. These two men had once been as close as brothers, but now they appeared as distant as planets, both following the gravity of their own separate moons. I felt uncomfortable in my skin as soon as I saw John. I had imagined us meeting again many times, I imagined the way he might look at me, and what the look might tell me about just how far we had likely grown apart. John hugged me and dark nights of the soul I had spent wondering about our friendship melted away. Years of hurt and tension and guilt flowed out of my body like ice in the spring. Optimism filled my heart and guided me through introductions to his new friends that, before coming here, I had been so nervous to meet. Peter and I had promised each other in the bar before leaving that, if the evening were to sour or uncomfortable, we would just leave quickly and continue catching up without John. Oh, how I wish that we had kept this promise to each other!
John’s friends were nice. We played card games and teased each other like old friends instead of strangers. I confided in a girl, with a shaved head and a Monroe piercing, that I had been nervous about seeing John. I explained to her that we were estranged high-school sweethearts. She smiled and nodded and then continued her conversation with her other friend, a shorter woman with kind eyes and a soft build. I became hot in the face and I could feel shame ooze into my body like a toxic spill from the tar sands. Shortly after this she left, and I wondered if perhaps she and John were sleeping together. I hoped that I had not intruded, but reasoned with myself that, if they were, he probably would have prepared her for the situation, or perhaps she would not have cared either way. Still, the situation had set something in motion inside me that I chose to ignore for the sake of maintaining the buzz of a rekindled friendship. In the background of my thoughts, the idea that I had confided this in her precisely BECAUSE I suspected that her and John were sleeping together buzzed around in my brain like a gnat. This shadow-thought lurked in my mind and I remembered myself as the person I once was, so scared and damaged, so young and reckless. My blood became ice for a brief moment, and I hated myself. I sat with this feeling for a moment and then waved goodbye to it. I reminded myself of all the work I have put in, since being a teenager, to minimize the damage I cause others. A therapist once told me that hurt people can be like injured animals in the wild. When you approach them to try and assist, they lash out in fear and hurt their helpers. I am more healed now and I can recognize people’s kindness for what it is. This thought gave lightness to my heavy mood.
Around this time, Peter began to become surly. This trait often surfaced with his consumption of alcohol. We all went outside for a cigarette and I asked John about his job. Peter was becoming increasingly defensive. He had assumptions about John’s career that were rooted in insecurity. I could not hold this against him. Peter has always been somewhat of a lost soul; in some ways I am too. Whether it be from a complicated up-bringing, or a certain astrological proclivity, we have always connected over pain and discomfort with reality. John was much more neurotypical than us. He had the perfect balance capitalist ambition and artistic talent that neither Peter, nor I, have ever seemed to master. For better or worse. I think that, when Peter left Ottawa after caring for his parents and breaking up with Mary, he needed to get away from himself almost as much as he needed to get away from this government shithole. Seeing John again put him too close to that person that he had been trying to run away from. He began to take verbal jabs at John. I tried my best to quell the tension with quiet reminders to Peter under my breath like, “think clearly” and “let go”, he seemed to not have heard me as we went inside.
Peter and I sat on the couch in the living room in silence together. He was leaned back into the cushions, with pursed lips and his gamblers poker face fully intact. He was watching John as if from far away, observing him like a wolf might observe a distant caribou calf what was straying behind the herd. It seemed he was resisting the urge to pounce and he suggested we leave. I felt relief as I moved to the door and got my coat. Pulling my phone from the left pocket, and searching for my uber app, I ordered a car and approached John to say goodbye. He seemed for a moment to not want us to leave and then invited us into the basement to look at his new drum kit. Peter agreed and I cancelled the uber. Descending into the basement would be the final act of the evening. The smell of stale beer, sweat and mould overpowered my nostrils and made me feel nostalgic. John was talking but I could barely understand what he was saying. Something to do with the specification of the instruments that he was showing off to Peter. I sat at the drums and banged aimlessly on the skins. I never had any real talent for music, unlike the other two men in the room with me. Peter picked up a guitar and strummed a single note. A chugging reverberation made the stale air in the room electric. I watch his gaze meet John’s eyes. It struck me that I had not seen these two men make eye contact all evening All at once words spilled out of Peter.
“What the fuck is wrong with you man?”
“What are you talking about, man.” replied John, stunned, although he probably shouldn’t have been.
I froze and wildly tried to force Peter to look at me. I called to him with my mind and begged him not to continue.
“Where have you been? Here you are with all new friends, and all you’ll talk about is your shitty new job!”
John then suddenly seemed to once again find his voice.
“My job isn’t shitty, I love my new job. What the fuck are you even doing these days anyways?”
Peter flushed with anger as more, and more potent, venom began to shoot from his mouth. He had always struggled to find a career path that suited him. He had tried for years to live up to his incredibly successful family’s expectations of him.
“You’re a fucking bastard John. You talk all night about this stupid job, and it’s like, you have totally forgot who you are! You haven’t kept in contact with anyone. Where the fuck is Greg, man? Do you even fucking care?”
I looked down at the floor and began to feel dizzy. In the corners of my vision a hot-red glow began, and I looked at Peter with the fury of the culmination of this catastrophe.
“That’s not fucking fair, Peter” I said, though no one heard.
Greg had been a friend during youth. I was never particularly close to him but knew him to be a faithful and honest person who had difficulty feeling confident or expressing himself. No one had heard from him in a very long time and rumours that he had fallen into darkness and depression we rampant. I knew that Peter unfairly blamed John for not keeping close enough in contact with Greg, as if this could have somehow helped the young man out of his spiral, it was a ridiculous and cruel thing to say.
“I don’t know, shit. Why the fuck would you even bring that up, Peter? You know what, dude, you’re a fucking ass hole and you’ve always been a fucking ass hole. You’re a selfish piece of shit and I’m glad I’ve moved on with my life.” John barked.
I felt tears well up in my eyes and I began pleading with them to stop. I begged both of them to not end the evening in such an ugly manner, but all my pleas went unheard and ignored as my two old friends tore each other to pieces in front of me. John told us to get out of his house and I selfishly hated Peter for starting this fight that would ensure that my friendship with John was certainly over. Peter began to cry and ask John if he meant what he said, to which John replied that he did. That’s when Peter lost control and with one loud crack knocked John across the face with a blow that landed accurately and brought him to the floor. Men from the living room now began to thunder downstairs in steel-toed combat boots. They dragged Peter upstairs and threw him from the house. I bent over and touched John’s face. He looked up at me and asked me in a voice that I recognized from him; a voice of fear and heartache.
“What just happened?”
I began to cry and told him that I didn’t know, I then apologized and told him that it was nice to see him. His eyes became dark and he looked away from me. I knew in that moment that it was all over. All of my hopes of reconciliation were dead and there was nothing to do now but leave.
I ordered another uber outside and my phone died. I sobbed uncontrollably on the way home. My misery was mirrored as Peter joined me and collectively our broken hearts expressed themselves in a symphony of tears. I told him that his ego was a fucking problem and that, when he drinks, he can be a jackass. He told me he knew that that he was sorry. We went back to my house and curled together on my couch, holding hands, we licked our wounds over tea, and he apologized profusely. I forgave him as he left and promised to call him in the morning.
Peter and I still call each other to catch up every once in a while. He has since completed his red seal and is working as a carpenter. I am very proud of him. John, on the other hand, has only sent me a message once since that evening. It was the day that a close friend of ours died. He asked me if I was okay, to which I replied that I was even though I was terribly sad. He said the same. I no longer think about a reconciliation, all of my past attempts have been met with little to no enthusiasm. It’s funny because, when we broke up, he made me promise him that we would still be friends. For my part, I will always keep that promise and will silently wish him peace and happiness for the rest of my days on earth.

LUCY AND HER ALL-NUN BAND
S4;E8 ~ November 1, 1971
Directed by Coby Ruskin ~ Written by Bob Carroll and Madelyn Davis
Synopsis
Harry's sister, a nun, needs a band to play at a benefit for the children's hospital so Lucy consults an agent who suggests an all-nun band from Kansas. The nuns are all set to play when their saxophonist gets the flu. Lucy volunteers to fill in, but first she takes a few quick lessons from noted bandleader and sax player Freddy Martin.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter)
Guest Cast
Mary Wickes (Sister Paula Carter) was one of Lucille Ball’s closest friends and at one time, a neighbor. She made a memorable appearances on “I Love Lucy” as ballet mistress Madame Lamond in “The Ballet” (ILL S1;E19). In her initial “Lucy Show” appearances her characters name was Frances, but she then made four more as a variety of characters for a total of 8 episodes. This is one of her 9 appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” Their final collaboration on screen was “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977.
Sister Paula has been a nun for 25 years.
Freddy Martin (Himself) was a saxophonist and band leader who first gained national attention in 1940 and continued on through the 1970s leading one of the most popular bands of the Big Band Era. Best known for his hit songs adapted from classical themes, his many hits on RCA Victor and Capitol records included "Cumana," "The Hut-Sut Song," "Bumble Boogie," adapted from Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee," and his theme song, "Tonight We Love," adapted from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. Martin was nicknamed “The Concerto King.” He died in 1983.
Lew Parker (Mr. Adams) is probably best remembered as the restaurateur father of Ann Marie, Marlo Thomas’ character on TV’s “That Girl” (1966-71). He made five appearances on “The Lucy Show.” He also appeared in the very first episode of “Here’s Lucy.” This is his final time co-starring with Lucille Ball.
The Remnants (Themselves, an All-Nun Band) was a real group of nuns from the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth, Kansas. They were an outgrowth of a 1940s dance band at St. Mary’s College, re-taking the stage in the late 1960s after nuns were permitted to wear street clothes and perform in public. They made two records.
Joan Carey (Audience Member, uncredited) was one of the few performers to appear in “I Love Lucy,” “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” She also served as Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in. [Thanks to The Lucy Lounge for spotting Carey!]
The audience at the final performance features uncredited background performers.
The first draft of this script was dated March 15, 1971. Handwritten notes by Lucille Ball and Gary Morton suggest that Lucie Arnaz’s charactere Kim do a tap dance!
It seems as if Mary Wickes was always wearing a habit on screen, but in fact (in addition to this episode), she only ever played two nuns on film: Sister Clarissa in The Trouble with Angels (1966) and Where Angels Go Trouble Follows (1968); and Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act (1992) and Sister Act 2 (1993). She was far more typically cast as nurses due to the popularity of her break-out role of Nurse Preen in The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942), a part she also played on Broadway and television.
In his DVD introduction to the episode, music director Marl Young recounts that the Remnants came to the attention of writer Bob Carroll after they did a benefit in California. Later, Young was invited to teach at their school in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Sister Paula is trying to raise money for the children's ward at St. John's Hospital.
Mr. Adams says he goes back to Larry Funk and his Band of a Thousand Melodies. This was a real-life band who were primarily responsible for introducing singer Helen O'Connell and Vaughn Monroe.
Mr. Adams tries to get Lucy interested in a St. Bernard who hums “Kitten on the Keys.” In 1921 Zez Confrey wrote his novelty piano solo "Kitten on the Keys", inspired by hearing his grandmother's cat walk on the keyboard of her piano. [You can’t make this stuff up!]
Adams then tries to convince her to use him – singing a few bars of “Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey” a capella and doing some dance moves.
When Harry finally agrees to pay the Remnants’ first class airfare from Kansas, he moans “Isn't it a shame they're not flying nuns!” Harry is referring to the ABC TV sitcom starring Sally Field titled “The Flying Nun” (1967-70) in which a nun's large coronet lifted her in the air on the windy island of Puerto Rico. Although the show had been off the air for nearly a year, it was previously mentioned several times on “Here's Lucy.”
When Lucy asks Harry to move up payday to Tuesday, he replies “Not a chance! They can shove Washington's birthday anywhere they want to, but my payday remains Friday.” In June 1968, a bill was enacted that consolidated Washington and Lincoln's birthdays into one holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February.
This is about as close as “Here's Lucy” (or any “Lucy”-com) gets to dealing with religion. From what Harry says about his parents (Lucy's in-laws) the Carter's were a very Catholic family, although the word “Catholic” is never spoken.
Lucy tells Freddy Martin that she spent many evenings dancing to his band at the Coconut Grove. The Los Angeles nightclub was were Martin hired Merv Griffin, who went on to usurp Martin in popularity. In 1957, Martin released an album titled Freddy Martin at the Coconut Grove.
Lucy tells Martin that she was first saxophone in the Jamestown High School Band, a claim that Lucy Ricardo also makes in “The Saxophone” (ILL S2;E2) in 1952.
Demonstrating 'tone' for Lucy, Martin plays his theme song "Tonight We Love," adapted from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto.
The performance of Lucy and The Remnants (and Sister Paula) is of the American gospel hymn “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Lucille Ball learned to play the saxophone for “The Saxophone” (ILL S2;E2) and the skill was interpreted into several episodes of the series after that. Even Lucy Carmichael on “The Lucy Show” knew how to play saxophone (although she also dabbled with the violin). Lucy Carter previously played the sax during the talent portion of the Miss Secretary Beautiful competition in “Lucy Competes with Carol Burnett” (S2;E24). Lucy Barker played the sax on “Life With Lucy” (1986).
To get Freddy Martin's attention when he is playing the saxophone, Lucy says “Whoah Fred!” something Lucy Ricardo often said to Fred Mertz (and Fred the dog) on “I Love Lucy.”
Family Matters! As usual, there is no discussion by anyone about Paula and Harry's late brother, Lucy's husband. Sister Paula also fails to ask about her niece and nephew. Not a very warm family, the Carters.
Light Bulb Moment! The gold lamp in Mr. Adams' office is the same one seen in Harry's office in “Lucy and Harry's Italian Bombshell” (S4;E3). In the office, the lamp has been replaced by a globe.
Oops! When Mary Wickes tries to bow with the drum strapped to her she nearly tumbles into the bass. The second time she bows she steadies herself by holding onto the piano.
“Lucy and Her All-Nun Band” rates 4 Paper Hearts out of 5
Mary Wickes in a nun’s habit? What’s not to like?! Freddy Martin seems like an afterthought, but that’s a minor quibble. The Remnants! Wow!

Mrs Douglas, with two of her daughters, having intimated their intention to visit Virginia, & to take Richmond, & some of the upper counties, including orange in their route, I have taken the liberty to give them this introduction to yours & Mrs Madisons acquaintance. They are of New York, & well respected there, & my nephew Lt Monroe having married one of her daughters, excite a strong motive with me, that they should be known to & kindly recd. by our friends.
To James Madison from James Monroe, 20 October 1824
Margaret Corne Douglas (d. 1829), was the widow of New York merchant George Douglas and was probably traveling with her daughters, Harriet and Margaret.
Lt. Monroe (1799–1870) is James Monroe’s nephew, also named James Monroe who was the son of his youngest brother Joseph Jones Monroe. Monroe took his nephew in as a surrogate son due to his father’s negligence. Due to his failure at getting his brothers anywhere he implemented his attention onto his nieces, nephews and entered James Monroe Jr. into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1813, where was commissioned a lieutenant in 1815, breveted captain in 1828, and resigned his commission in 1832. He later served as a representative from New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1839 to 1841. He married Elizabeth Mary Douglas in 1822.

These 6 Women Shaped Photojournalism During LIFE’s Heyday
Self Portrait, 1946. Margaret Bourke-White Etherton Gallery
When Life magazine debuted on November 23, 1936, it transformed American photojournalism overnight. Publisher Henry Luce believed the 20th century to be “the American century”—and he promoted that message through images. Before Life, magazine articles in the U.S. consisted of “a picture that illustrated a story,” said curator Marilyn Kushner of the New-York Historical Society. Afterwards, “it was the text that illustrated the photograph.”
Working with the Life Picture Collection, Kushner co-curated “LIFE: Six Women Photographers,” an exhibition highlighting the female staff photographers of Life magazine, which is currently on view at the New-York Historical Society through October 6th. During its heyday as a weekly magazine, and before it was first suspended in 1972, Life employed 101 salaried photographers—but only six were women.
Combined, those six photographers shot over 325,000 images from the 1930s to the early 1970s. Kushner, along with fellow curators Sarah Gordon, Erin Levitsky, and William J. Simmons, selected one story from each woman that showed a different facet of Luce’s idea of American eminence. However, by showing unpublished images, too, they peeled back the glossy veneer applied by the editorial team, whose vision often portrayed American life in a different light from what the photographers observed firsthand.
Many of the world’s iconic images and landmark photo stories were shot for Life. The magazine published Larry Burrows’s cover of a dying pilot in a helicopter in Vietnam in 1965; Philippe Halsman’s portrait of then–rising star Marilyn Monroe in 1952; and Alfred Eisenstaedt’s capture of a Times Square kiss on VJ Day in 1945. But Life debuted with a cover story by Margaret Bourke-White. And she, along with the five women below, helped shape contemporary photojournalism.
Margaret Bourke-White (1904–1971)

In 1936, Bourke-White was sent to Fort Peck, Montana, to capture the physical embodiment of American exceptionalism—the largest man-made hydraulic dam in the world—for Life’s first cover. She returned with much more than images of the towering New Deal project.
“What the editors expected were construction pictures as only Bourke-White can take them,” Luce wrote in the magazine’s introduction. “What the editors got was a human document of American frontier life.”
Bourke-White’s image of the monumental spillway made the cover, but she also turned her lens on the men and women who moved to the town seeking reprieve from the Great Depression. Her images of the working class relaxing after a long day captured the spirit of the hopeful town.

Bourke-White has since been revered for her absolute tenacity. She was the first woman to become a war correspondent, embedding with Allied infantrymen in World War II—and survived after her ship was torpedoed on the way there. Yet she and the other female photographers she worked with faced endemic sexism in the workplace, from their opinions being disregarded to the editorial staff treating them like a novelty. In 1949, Nina Leen, Martha Holmes, and Lisa Larsen were the subject of an internal newsletter on the fashion of Life’s female photographers. “How to look feminine and still be photographically efficient is a daily problem for Life’s female photographers,” the memo noted. Bourke-White’s standard wartime look? “Slacks, skirt, jacket, and sometimes a topcoat.”

Kushner said that it’s important to understand the context of the era when reflecting on the magazine’s history. “They had to fight harder to get what they wanted,” she said, “but they were focused on taking the photograph and not focused on how they were being treated as women.”
Marie Hansen (1918–1969)
Marie Hansen, photograph from “The WAACs,” LIFE, September 7, 1942. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
At a time when American politicians are still at odds over who should be able to serve their country, it is worthwhile to look back at Hansen’s photo essay about the brand-new Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1942. Shot the same year the St. Louis, Missouri, native was promoted from researcher to staff photographer, the series, according to the curators, “helped Americans accept women in uniform.”
More than 150,000 women served in the army during World War II, primarily tasked with clerical and mechanical work. But despite recognition from General Douglas Arthur as being his “best soldiers,” the nascent WAAC was met with condescension: “Though old Army men harumph at the sight of girls trying to act like soldiers, all WAACs get a thorough grounding in basic infantry drill,” the Life article stated.

However, the editors didn’t completely subvert gender roles with Hansen’s photo essay. The curators noted that “potentially threatening images of young women…studying truck engines, organizing supply chains, and wearing gas masks were tempered by scenes of WAAC’s ironing their uniforms and singing at a piano.” One of the images, featuring the women in formation in starchy pinstripe uniforms, is captioned:“The exercises are designed to foster flexibility and endurance, not bulging muscles.”
Martha Holmes (1923–2006)
Martha Holmes, photograph from “Mr. B.,” LIFE, April 24, 1950. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
At just 20 years old, Martha Holmes joined the staff of Life after working at local papers in her home city of Louisville, Kentucky. During her nearly four-decade-long tenure as a staffer and freelancer, she took innumerable notable portraits of famous figures, including some of the most well-known images of artist Jackson Pollock, squatting over a canvas with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
In 1950, Holmes photographed Billy Eckstine, the mixed-race jazz singer whose smooth ballads drew crowds of teenaged followers and sold millions of records for MGM. Among Holmes’s images was a snap of a white female fan embracing him on the street; an innocent gesture, but a career-destroying moment for Eckstine.

“It’s actually what America should be like, with no racial tension, no racial separation—just honest love and happiness between the races,” biographer Cary Ginell told NPR in 2014. “But America wasn’t ready for that in 1950. White America did not want Billy Eckstine dating their daughters.”
Holmes felt the image was one of her strongest for the same reasons echoed by Ginell. She said it showed “what the world should be like,” not knowing that Eckstine would be blacklisted for decades, finally receiving a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999, six years after his death.
Lisa Larsen (ca. 1925–1959)
Lisa Larsen, photograph from “Tito As Soviet Hero, How Times Have Changed!” LIFE, June 25, 1956. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
When Lisa Larsen joined Life in the 1940s, she had already fled Nazi Germany as a young woman and worked as a photographer for publications such as Vogue and the New York Times. She was initially assigned fashion and entertainment stories—famously taking the wedding images of the Kennedy–Bouvier union. But in the 1950s, she became known for her easy way with politicians and her keen eye for composition.
In 1956, during the Cold War, Life sent Larsen to the Kremlin to document Nikita Khrushchev welcomingYugoslavian president Josep Broz, or “Tito.” Just eight years before, Tito had broken away from Soviet influence under Joseph Stalin and had since survived the Kremlin’s assassination attempts. But Krushchev’s effort to bring Tito back into the fold of the Soviet Union was in good faith—not a setup, as Americans expected.

The curators noted that Larsen’s unpublished images revealed “her uncanny ability to record the depth of Soviet effort to put on a good show,” seen in one image of a woman kneeling on the street, carefully painting a grate. Larsen caught the attention of Tito, too; she was the only photographer granted permission to take images of him during his downtime at Sochi’s Black Sea resort.
Nina Leen (ca. 1909–1995)
Nina Leen, unpublished photograph from “American Woman’s Dilemma,” LIFE, June 16, 1947. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
Though fashion models, socialites, royalty, and animals all graced Nina Leen’s lens, it was American culture that continually fascinated the Russian-born photographer, who immigrated from Europe to New York just as World War II began. Leen photographed over 40 covers for Life during more than three decades, chronicling American life as the country ebbed and flowed between four major conflicts.
In one particular photo essay from 1947, she was asked to take pictures of the “American Woman’s Dilemma”—for the many women who sought employment during the war, how would they return to “normalcy” after? The accompanying article, written by a man, bumbled through a prescient discussion of the struggle to balance work, life, and childcare by positioning all women as dutiful mothers and wives who had no purpose in life beyond those roles. “She wants a husband and she wants children,” the magazine deck read. “Should she go on working? Full time? Part time? Will housework bore her? What will she do when her children are grown?” As one image caption claimed, “Too much leisure can be a heavy burden.”
Nina Leen, photograph from “American Woman’s Dilemma,” LIFE, June 16, 1947 (similar frame published). Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
Leen’s images showed factory worker Josephine Gloss assembling dolls; artist Edna Eicke illustrating covers for The New Yorker at home; and television broadcaster Dorothy Wootton rehearsing lines with her family nearby. Only one of Leen’s portraits of an unmarried woman—captioned “Unmarried with future decisions to make”—made the cut.
Despite the editorial team’s cherry-picking to show the viewpoint they had in mind, looking at Leen’s work through a contemporary lens raises cultural questions we still debate today in discourse about federally sanctioned maternity leave. “I find it very interesting that what came out of that was the fact that it was very hard for women to work and have a baby at the same time,” Kushner said of Leen’s images.
Hansel Mieth (1909–1998)
Hansel Mieth, photograph from “International Ladies’ Garment Workers: How a Great Union Works Inside and Out,” LIFE, August 1, 1938. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
In 1938, one year after she was hired by Life, Hansel Mieth followed the activities of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) for a story to highlight the benefits of organized labor in Depression-era America. Mieth was a German photographer originally named Johanna, but changed it to travel throughout Europe disguised as a boy with her eventual husband-to-be, Otto Hagel. In the U.S., she focused on social topics for Life. This particular assignment on the ILGWU was meant to “portray factory workers as aspiring members of the middle-class,” the curators noted—an embodiment of the American Dream.
Hansel Mieth, photograph from “International Ladies’ Garment Workers: How a Great Union Works Inside and Out,” LIFE , August 1, 1938. Courtesy of and © LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation.
The Life editors primarily printed Mieth’s images of a picturesque summer retreat. “They had a dance line and they went to classes, they sat in the sun, they rode horses,” Kushner said of women in the images. Many of Mieth’s more intimate shots of factory workers at home or participating in racially integrated activities did not make it to print, nor did her image of a worker striking. “They didn’t want to show that side of it,” Kushner said.
But the editors’ notions didn’t stop Mieth from firing her shutter. In fact, in 1940, editor Wilson Hicks sent her a memo that she took too much film. “In several recent stories you have gone overboard. The Hymes child photography story today is the latest one. We could have done with 20 pictures of him. You took 77,” Hicks wrote. “This suggestion hasn’t anything to do with the quality of your work, which, as I said at the outset of this memo, is splendid.”
